Tyres, tubes and valves

Three things have to agree: tyre width, tube size and valve.

- Tube ↔ tyre: the tube must match the wheel diameter (usually 700c) and cover the tyre's width range — a 700×25c tyre needs a 700c tube rated for roughly 23–28 mm.
- Valve type: modern road/tri wheels use Presta; Schrader (car-style) is rare on performance wheels. They are not interchangeable, and the rim's valve hole is drilled for one. Check before buying.
- Valve length ↔ rim depth: the valve must be at least 15–20 mm longer than the rim depth so the pump head can seat. A 50 mm deep rim needs ~60 mm; a 65 mm rim needs ~80 mm (or a valve extender).

Pedals, cleats and shoes

The compatibility that trips up beginners is that cleats match the pedal system, not the shoe — the shoe just needs the right bolt pattern to mount them.

- Road systems (Look Kéo, Shimano SPD-SL, Wahoo Speedplay) use 3-bolt cleats and larger platforms for stiffness — the usual triathlon choice.
- Off-road/commuter (Shimano SPD) uses 2-bolt metal cleats that clear mud and are easier to walk in.
