Setup: what you need
- Indoor trainer (or doorway and a friend to stabilize you)
- Smartphone with slow-motion video (240 fps ideal)
- Tape measure and a level surface
- Bike shorts, cycling shoes, helmet
- Pencil and paper
- 15–20 minute warm-up before measuring (cold = false readings)
Wear your race kit. Aerobars must be in race position. Pump tires to race pressure. Take all photos from the drive (right) side at hip height — this matters for accurate angle measurement.
Check 1 — Saddle height (knee angle)
Target: 25–35° knee bend at bottom dead center (BDC), or a 145–155° interior knee angle.

Drop (saddle top to aerobar pad): 10–20 cm for age-groupers, 15–25 cm for experienced racers. Do not chase pro drops. Excessive drop closes the diaphragm, kills power, and makes the run feel terrible.
Aerobar angle: Slight upward tilt (10–20°) lets you rest weight on forearms without sliding forward. Flat or downward-tilted bars cause shoulder fatigue within an hour.

Fore/aft: The pedal spindle should sit directly under the ball of your foot (the 1st metatarsal head — the bony bump behind your big toe). Mark it through the shoe with a pen while standing on a flat surface, then align the cleat.
