Braking: Rim brakes lose 30–50% of their power in the wet and need a wheel rotation or two to clear water from the braking surface. Disc brakes are far less affected but still need earlier inputs on a wet road. Double your braking distance and finish braking before you turn in.

Wet transition setup

A soaked transition costs minutes and misery.

  • Bin bag over everything. Cut a small hole in the closed end, slide it over your handlebars or racked kit so it sheds water and lifts off in one motion.
  • Shoes in a plastic bag or upside down under the towel until you need them.
  • Nutrition in sealed zip bags — wet gel wrappers become impossible to open with cold hands.
  • Skip the towel if it's raining hard; it becomes a wet sponge. Use it only to stand on.

Fuelling: Cold suppresses thirst but not sweat losses under a rain jacket. Drink to a schedule, not to thirst — set a 15-minute alarm. Carbohydrate needs are unchanged (60–90 g/hr), and some athletes need slightly more because shivering burns energy.

Hypothermia — the warning signs that end your race

Cold rain plus wind plus a wet body is the classic hypothermia setup, and it can happen at air temperatures as high as 15°C.
