A good triathlon time is one that reflects your course, conditions, age category, experience and goal. In our event-weighted sample, the middle event median was 1:24:22 for Sprint, 2:34:33 for Olympic/standard, 5:38:52 for 70.3 and 12:23:58 for full distance. Quick answer: good depends on the comparison

There is no single good triathlon time. A first safe finish, a personal best, the median at one race and an age-group podium are four different standards. For a neutral starting point, compare your result with finishers at the same event and distance, then with your category, and only then with the broader sample below.

The sample's middle event medians were Sprint 1:24:22, Olympic/standard 2:34:33, 70.3 5:38:52 and full 12:23:58. How the benchmark sample was built

We sampled five official mass-participation result datasets for each distance, with every distance represented in at least three regions. World Triathlon participant rows came from its official event XLSX exports; IRONMAN rows came from the participant result data behind its official result pages. For each event-distance we removed elite/pro fields, relay teams and records marked DNS, DNF or DSQ/DQ. We also excluded altered courses from the standard-distance sample. We parsed valid finish times into seconds, calculated the event median and quartiles, and then took the median of the five event medians so the largest event did not dominate.

The dated event-level dataset is published at the benchmark sample CSV, including the official dataset identifier for reproducibility. Quartiles use inclusive linear interpolation. Event pages remain the source of record; corrected official results may change later. This is a deliberately small convenience sample, not a census of triathletes.

Benchmark table by distance

Sprint commonly means 750 m swim, 20 km bike and 5 km run (0.47/12.4/3.1 mi); standard/Olympic commonly means 1.5 km, 40 km and 10 km (0.93/24.9/6.2 mi). A 70.3 totals 113 km (70.3 mi), and a full-distance race totals about 226 km (140.6 mi). Actual advertised or measured legs can vary, so verify the event record.

Read the median as the halfway result within a sampled event, not a cutoff between good and bad. The interquartile range (IQR) contains the middle half of the five event medians and shows how much venue selection changes the reference point.

Why two identical distances produce different times

Open-water current, swim length, transition distance, bike elevation and wind, road surface, run heat and aid-station layout can shift total time substantially. Draft-legal and non-drafting races are not equivalent. A hilly 40 km (24.9 mi) bike leg cannot be normalized by comparing only average speed with a flat course.

Timing boundaries matter too: one organizer may place the swim-exit mat close to shore while another includes a long run to transition. Compare split definitions before diagnosing performance. If the course profile or weather was unusual, use your placing within the same field and execution against plan as the primary context.

Use age group and experience without turning them into excuses

Overall medians mix different ages, genders, goals and experience levels. Find the official category result and compare the percentage of valid finishers ahead of you. For a first race, execution goals—continuous safe swim, legal bike, controlled early run and no avoidable equipment errors—are more useful than chasing a sampled median. For a later race, compare your own course-adjusted splits and category percentile over time.

Turn a benchmark into a responsible pacing plan

Start with recent training evidence, not the time you hope to see. Estimate the swim from a continuous effort in similar water, the bike from a sustainable outdoor ride, and the run from a brick session rather than a fresh standalone race. Add realistic transitions and a course/weather allowance.
